Motronic analysis

Hi,
basically I've been trying to read the diagnostic wire coming from the 
ECU of my BMW K1100RS Motorcycle. (Bosch Motronic)
The wire seems to sit at +5v all day. I've decked it to ground with a 1K 
resistor (momentarily)and my 'scope shows it pulling down... however, 
nothing else seems to happen. I obviously have to "talk" to it in order 
for it to spill it's brains to me!
So, what do I say to it? Has anybody got details of the protocol it uses? 
Also what about baud rates / level shifting etc to get it into my laptop 
via RS232?
