Um, I wouldn't make that assumption about VE right off, as VE is affected 
by Helmholtz resonance(tuned length, or pressure wave supercharging), and as 
the speed of sound changes with density 
(and to a small degree temperature)  and this Helmholtz resonation will 
affect VE.  
I doubt that this effect is significant, unless the temp or density changes 
are large. But I am not an expert. But, I would be willing to bet that the 
SAE has a few papers on just this topic...
