GM TPI auto trans -> manual?

My 700r4 has a quirk. When I manually shift and hold third gear, I feel what
seems to be a light shift, converter clutch I assume. Is this so? Also, is
the converter clutch supposed to engage immediately after 4th gear or wait a
few seconds before comming in?
