The 4A series motors are all 1.6 liter, 4 cylendar motors.
The 16v and 20v engines are NOT economy motors. The economy motor is the
4A-C, a carburreted 8valve motor. This particular one put out about 75 or
so HP, while the 16v motors put out substancially more.
For instance, there were two distinct versions of the 4A-GE. A 112Hp one
(called blue hat, since the vavle cover letters are in blue), a 125 Hp one
(called red hat for above reasons). Horsepower numbers varied from year to
year, but are in the general range.
There was a superchraged version of this motor called the 4A-GZE. Hp is
around 170.
The 20VVT motor (20v also) is a 5 valve per cylendar, variable valve
timing, naturally aspirated motor which develops 170 horse.
For more information on these motors, broken down by year, (and some cool
info on Bosch J-jettronic stuff) check out Matti's homepage. I have it

IMHO, they are quite cabable of holding their own. Mr2 is a 4A-GE car,
and the SC variant is both bulletproof and quick.
