I have heard some alternators (Corvette/HiPo Chevy) can cause noise
problems and/or unstable output.
I don't remember the specifics except that it seemed to be
early '90's late '80's TPI that had the problem. The solution was a 
more modern alternator. I can look up the specific post on this and
repost it to all if you're interested.
