Motorola or Microchip?

Microchip PICs virtually dominate the hobbiest market due to great
low qty availability and a few low cost tools. The "real"
development tools (in circuit emulator) still cost real money - but
in most cases the hobbiest can do without it. There is a large
amount of info on the 'net on PICs - you can build your own
programmer from that info for almost nothing.

PICs also (usually) offer more performance per $ if outright speed is
important.

Motorola has been working hard to get back a share of the low end uP
market after losing it with nearly infinite delivery times a few
years back right when microchip was on the upswing. For hobbiest
purposes (and in my case production purposes) I have been very happy
with microchip so far - and am keeping my fingers crossed for the
future.

Good Luck
