fuel line i.d.

Howdy.  What's a good inside diameter for fuel supply lines?  3/8 or 5/16 
or is there something better yet.  MSD sells a fuel pumb that has 3/8 on 
the inlet side and 5/16 on the outlet side.  It's rated at 45 gal/hour @ 
35 psi and 12 volts.  Goes up to about 55 gal/hr with 13.5 volts !!!  
Should be adequate for a 400-450 hp V8.  8)
What does it take to deliver that kind of voltage to the pump?  Some kind 
of transformer or something?
