EFI vs. engine capacity

Back to DIY_EFI.....

I'm thinking of converting a 1500cc engine to EFI. I'm planning on
sourcing most of my parts from the junkyard. The local junkyards
are full of cheap systems from 1600cc to 1800cc cars. 
So let me ask some general questions....

I assume a 1600cc system would be ok, but what would be a practical size
limit?
Is drilling a cast iron manifold for injectors worth the bother vs.
making a custom manifold?
I'm leaning towards a hot wire sensor, pulse injector, like a Bosch 
LH-Jetronic type of system, any thoughts?
Recomened books?
