  But it's the current going through you that will get you.

  12V is not enough to push any real amount of current through
the human body. You can hold the battery terminals without
problems.

  The high current capability could cause a lot of heat
though, and that is never safe. We all know the white-hot-wrench
when placed on the battery terminals.
