  Well, over the long haul, yes. But the battery allows you to
get theoretical benefit when you want it, and pay for it when
you don't care.

  The net effect will cost you gas mileage for the same
covered distance, but you can charge the battery while
cruising, to drain it during a blast of acceleration where
you need a hundred amps.
