technical assistance

Hi,
I know what the topic of this forum is, but I have a 
technical/application type question.  I have a 93 mazda protege with EFI 
and while trying to rmove the air flow meter portion of the air cleaner 
box, I may have damaged the meter or it's plug (with the sensors on it); 
is it THAT sensitive to damage?  Also, would it cause the car not to 
start (that's what happened)?  It's the only thing I touched, so I'm 
guessing I did something wrong..any suggestions?
Any help would be appreciated
