flywheels on 86-up SBC

I removed the flexplate on my 88 5.0L TPI SBC to install a flywheel
and discovered that it had and extra weight to "unbalance" it. This is the
first SBC that I have with the newer one piece rear main seal. Is it true
that I need an externally balanced flywheel? Would it be different from
a 400 small block?
