O2 sensor algorithm

I found on SAE papers ( http://www.sae.org ) one document
970514 - "An algorithm for calculating the air/fuel ratio from
exaust emissions" . Anyone one the list which now about this 
kind of algorithms and if can be used with a normal O2 sensor?
