I haven't used them myself, but i've been told that they require a high
(~60v dc) "grid" voltage (you can see a grid if you look closely at a
VFD - another TLA :)). If you can get your hands on an old video
recorder, which has one of these, and the associated cct diagram would
help somewhat too.
You could always try a search on the web, there's bound to be something
published on this stuff.
