distributorless conversion

Has anyone attempted a conversion to coil/cylinder distributor ignition?
I'd be starting with a Bosch Hall-Effect (primary) distributor. 

Could an card-reader (led/photocell) / rotating disk scheme work in place
of HV rotor etc.?

It seems like the coil selection can be somewhat "coarse" as the
existing hall-effect will handlle the timing.
