Geez... A pushrod V6 buick BONE STOCK in a single turbo app (86/87 Buick
GN) provides 300 crank HP (245 at the rear wheels) and 330 Lb/ft torque.
Minor mods (Under $500) to the exhaust/chip/intake net over 300HP at the
rear wheels, and still provide factory driveability and 25+ MPG at cruise.
Going a bit more drastic with a bigger
turbo/intercooler/injectors/exhaust/fuelpump you can reach 600HP on the
STOCK ENGINE (Internally). According to Bernard Santavy (used to work for
Buick SVO back in the 80's) the 3.8 turbo motor was designed to handle
600HP in stock trim without failure. Many a GN enthusiast has reached this
plateau on the stock engine. Lawrence conley ran this for may years in
"Black" his 86 GN. it ran solidly in the high 9 second/low 10 second range
(Weiging over 3000 Lbs), was as streetable as stock, and wasn't running N2O.
(In fact his License plate used to be NO NOS). When the fun went out of
running these speeds and power levels with the STOCK ECM (Very modified
chip though...) He went to the DFI. It helped a little, but not that much
of an improvement was seen. Then he took an 83 regal and planted a Buick
Stage 2 4.1L V6 with a single turbo in it and was running in the
1200-1300HP range... Still on Gasoline and no Nitrous. This 3000 lb car
(Nicknamed Tweaked) was running a best of 7.83seconds @ 178 MPH in the 1/4
mile. Just goes to show that if you know the right combination required to
get the most air/fuel into and out of the combustion chamber, you can do
quite a bit!
Later,
Dave
