Chev block identification

Can anyone tell me year and the possible car this 350 Chev block was meant
for.  The casting number is GM3970014, also where is the engine number
generally located (can't find it) ?  Are any blocks made for export without
engine numbers on them, as apparently this engine was brought into Oz from
the US.

Problem is that I finally tried to get my car registered with the new
engine, but failed because of 1 minor detail, inspector couldn't find an
engine number.
