Yamaha used that on their old Enduro 125 motorcross bikes. ( actually the
endura was a dual purpose, for both street and off-road).  It had a
commutator setup, and and external stator on the crank that worked both
ways.  Starting sounded funny cause there's no gear noise.  The system
worked extremely well, espically since a kick start was available just in
case..
