VW stands for Volkswagen.  I use HEI (High Energy Ignition) on the 
flat four engines.  I don't think they will easily fit on the Rabit 
engine.  The angle between the block and the distributor is to 
shallow even if you were to machine the small block chevy 
dristributor with its long shaft.
As to why I use them, They just deliver a lot of energy to get the 
combustion process started. Also they are very flexible and cheap.
