Ok.  Near as I can figure out:

Little cap HEI dist (remote coil) as used in trucks and Camaro:

Connector pin    Wire color     Signal

   A             Black/Red      Ref Low
   B             Tan/Black      Bypass
   C             Purple/White   Reference
   D             White          EST

Big HEI dist (Coil in cap) as used in Vette: (and I think carbs)
Note reversal of connector lettering....

   D             Black/Red      Ref Low
   C             Tan/Black      Bypass
   B             Purple/White   Reference
   A             White          EST
