Vat signal

Does anyone know the drive characteristics for the VAT signal on
a 165 (86 vette) ? Can it be driven safely with a 555 timer or
is a driver transistor needed? Can the 555 be run off battery or
does the supply need to be regulated? Anyone with experience here
or just theory?
