PIC is a microcontroller. Made by Microchip Inc. they're great little
things, cheap, and highly integrated. Some are EEPROM based, some are
flash based, some are regular EPROM w/quartz window. Some come with
A/D. Digikey carries most of the line. Microchip has all the
development tools on their WWW page, plus they have affordable
programmers. The PICstart Plus programming kit will get you started for
$200, it includes a sample chip. The chips cost from $5 to $20, the
EPROM ones with ceramic packages and quartz windows cost the most.
