Bruce/Others,

Just posting an alternative. The PIC is something that YOU CAN PROGRAM, it
is very easy, and will let you get an introduction into the harsh reality
of programming. They even have version that have a mini version of BASIC
(the basic stamp), easing the pain one more level. Their are a couple of
very good into books that teach the basics of the PIC, and if you can
assemble a BBQ you can get this! The 555 is a neat idea, but by the time
you get all the gook working, you could have really built a simple
controller that will work much better. Again, the PIC has 35 instructions,
millions of sample programs etc. The 555 will be very easy to build, but
difficult to make work well (opinion).

If any one is interested in some starter PIC books, check out these -

Easy PIC'n
PIC'n up the pace

Both are like simple text from Square 1 Electronics
On the Web at - www.sq-1.com

They even have a simple PCB for doing testing for about $15.

All the above is just some info incase anyone might be interested, lots of
other approached to doing non CPU based EFI, ask BENDIX ;-)

Sandy
