Ford Error Codes

Greetings,

I have a 93 Ford Tempo 140 4 cyl auto, that is experiencing a visit from
the "Check Engine Soon" light, when the light first comes on, there is a
slight loss of power, "maybe 5mph speed loss" then after 30 seconds or so
it will smooth out. At that point the light may go out but may not.

This problem seems happen after driving for some time 30-45 min.

I dumped the error codes per the instructions in a "Hayes" shop manual for
the model and found a "33" code stored which hayes says can be an EGR valve
or Canister.

Does this sound familiar to any one and if so is there any way to determine
if I should go with the EGR valve or canister as the first thing to
replace?
