When I need speed information I buy a electronic bicycle speedometer 
for less than  $10.  Put the magnet on the wheel, mount the sender on 
the backing plate, run the wire to the steering wheel, VOILA I have 
present speed, max. speed, avg. speed, etc depending on which one of 
many models I choose.  Drawback, the display is small and the buttons 
to change read-out are impossible.
