Hi Wayne,
My dad had a 450SEL car for a few years. It was a late 1978 UK spec
which meant about 1980 Australian spec. It ran Bosch K-Jet. Simple
mechanical FI that had no problems in its life. In several years of use all
that it needed was its injectors cleaned ultra-sonically and regular oil
changes. Had new injectors priced at about AUS$100 a set. Extremely reliable
car but religiously change the timing chain every 40-50K kms otherwise
factor in a $6000 engine rebuild. Being a high compression spec UK motor it
hated unleaded but developed a healthy taste for leaded. Best we ever got
was about 13L/100km or 25MPG on a trip down to Melbourne. The car wound upto
200kph and stayed there for over 10 minutes before we slowed down to avoid
traffic on the highway down. Email me directly for more Mercedes W116 stories.
BTW, your car should run Bosch D-Jet, which is a analog
electronically controlled system, slightly more efficient than the K-Jet.
D-Jet is more unreliable though. I know this as at one stage I wanted an
early 450SE with this type of injection. The ECU costs about AUS$1000 and
should be replaced atleast every 8 years for reliability. I know a place in
Sydney that can reprogram\repair the ECU for more performance. You might be
only able to convert to K-Jet(very expensive) or post-1980
K-Jetronic(scarily priced). Both of these K-Jet's require a post-'77
electronic distributor.
Djet injector bosses would have to be remachined to use a Delco type
injectors and DELCO ECM. You would also need the later electronic
distributor. Email directly for more ideas. Hope this helps. Cheers
