I also heard that having dual plugs helps to avoid misfires since the
fuel mixture isn't perfectly homogeneous.  The thought here is that
you cut in half the chances that two places in the cylinder head have
a poor enough mix next to the plug that they won't ignite.  Misfires
not only get the anti-smoggers uptight while killing power output, but
tends to mess up the dynamic parameters in the fuel injection system
as well.  Not sure this is the greatest backup strategy if the computer
is counting on a fast burn though.
