This and that

Hi all, I've summarised some of my ideas on topics underdiscussion at the
moment.

Twin plugs
Can fix many deficincies in a combustion chamber, why they are used in
rotary engines, why top fuel cars use multi plugs, the Ford Corsair ( an
Aussie jap re-badge) also uses them. Repco did serious testing back when
they worked with Jack Brabham in Formula 1. A Big draw back can be clashing
flame front - PINGING it can punch holes in just about any thing. It is all
a balance but good chamber design and direct injection (see orbeng
references) do the best job at efficient power production. A rich mixture
in the cetre of the chamber and no fuel washing ciylinder walls and a
buffer of air(only) insulating the fire from the metal.

Bore size,
As enignes run on heat the more heat you can use to expand gas and push
pistons the better. Reducing surface area is the aim - thus less heat is
wasted. Forced induction plus engine size reduction, ceramic coatings etc
all help for efficient heat conversion thus more power.
 Again the balancing act.

Diesel with opposed piston 2 cranks etc.

Called "Coma Knocker" they had some at tech when I was there.
They are 2 stroke - no valves!
Dish shaped piston - 2 hemispheres with notch for injector.
Use a blower similar in principle to GM diesels.
Coma Knocker because the diesel knock was the tell tale of what was coming
up the read long before sighting. Used in trucks of european origin in the
1950's my guess.

All the above have a common vein put the combustion at the cnte of the
sphere and let the expansion push for as long as possible.

The balancing act is POWER, TORQUE, EFFICIENCY, in the real world you cant
get it all so pick the important one and do the best to keep the other OK

I cant find spit.zip on the ftp site - should it be there was it there does
it have a different name?

Knowledge is Power
but,
Knowing when not to try and do it yourself.
