If you need a bit more grunt you can use the V25+ (10Mhz version).
Otherwise something like the V854 RISC processor (AU$25), 16ch 8bit ADC, 4ch
PWM, 4ch Serial I/O, 2ch 24bit timer/counter, 6ch 16bit timer/counter, 8ch
realtime output port, etc, etc all running at 33Mhz with up to 16Mbytes
external ram, power consumption is 120mW.
