Yeah, that's in fact by far the most common "common" heh, to tie both
primary and secondary up together to +BAT. Then the module/points just
connects the other side of the primary to GND to saturate the coil, and
then opens (disconnects B) that connection from GND. So-called "low side
driver".
The idea of tying one side of the secondary to +12 always surprises
people at first, but with 10s of kilovolts on the other end of the
secondary, it hardly matters whether it's standing off of gnd or a mere
12v. Really mox nix.
