Keep in mind that an automotive type "high pressure" fuel pump in the tank
is NOT considered safe. The problem is that with pressurized fuel lines any
crack, pin-hole, etc. spits out fuel. In a car it goes on the road (~safe).
In a boat it goes in the hull (~not safe). Also, no recirculation from the
pressure regulator back to the tank for the same reason.
Typically two fuel pumps are used; one is a higher volume, lower pressure
"lifting pump" that gets the fuel up to a mechanical or electrical
high-pressure pump that supplies the rail. The "high-pressure" run is made
as short as possible using very robust materials.
>From an engineering perspective, it is a pain to work with. Vapor lock is a
real issue. However, safety first.
