alternative engines

I can tell you that the old 12cyl diesel engines from the M-60 class tanks 
were A LOT louder than the M1 tanks.
Also, I don't know how the tranny in the M1s worked, but from what I 
understand, there was no shifting involved and I know that the turbine 
engines sounded like they were increasing RPMs with increases in speed and I 
don't recall ever hearing one "shift gears" either.
