some of the War Planes had a system that used a clutched blower system
it is possible
there is enough air leakage around a roots or scroll type of blower
to support normal cruising speeds


also while I have your attention
anyone ever installled a DFI system or similar onto a Hilborn setup

I can get a good deal on a complete hilborn and the with EFI it should
be able to make good power and economy for cruising too
