I SUSPECT the difference may be significant in some axle designs. I have a
GM graph that shows the drag advantage of variable displacement automatic
trans pumps. They are careful to show overall driveline drag to a RWD
vehicle with a hypoid gearset. The difference is relatively significant.
Of course, it would be nice to see some reliable data on hypoid gear
friction...
