My main objection is that spammers 'harvest' email addresses from USENET,
and use them to generate spam that does not appear in the newsgroup (new
oxymoron : "private spam").  There are also issues with some ISPs not
carrying all of the newsgroups, and with loosing messages if you don't check
the NG very often (like during a vacation).

Also note that, when accessing USENET for the first time, Netscape may
'freeze' while it downloads the latest list of newsgroups from your ISPs
server.
