mmm - You could rig up an old diaphragm from any vacuum ignition to
a rack and pinion - from a mecaano set and use that to turn a pot.

Dead simple, robust, cheap, needs experience with meccano and you
get to pull the volume control off your sister's stereo ;-)

I was going to use something similar to provide some timing retard when
my engine is on boost - same arrangement except the linear motion goes
through a simple link to rotate the distributor...
