spark question: high current or high voltage

I'm currently working on a high current ignition system but I've got a
couple questions.  Is it better to use a wider gap and higher voltage or a
small gap (lower voltage 10-15kV) and very high current (spark current in
the 1-5 amp range)?  There was some talk about plasma jet ignition a while
back.  Has anyone built such a system?
