The impression I got was that FI is better than carburetors because at the end of the day it's simpler.  I don't recall any statement such as the one you indicate.

In fact, at one point he makes a bit of a joke about how, when designing an induction system, if you attempted to do as much as possible without resorting to a computer you would end up with - wait for it - a carburetor.

That little joke indicated one of the strengths of the book, I thought.  To describe how FI works, Hartman did not make the common mistake of comparing it to carburetion.  Instead, he started with what an engine needs for induction and how you might approach these requirements with a FI system.  This is how he simplifies the discussion and even suggests how FI is a simpler approach than carburetion.  At the end, a carburetor becomes the most complex and sphisticated approach to induction.
