No, I'm a clumsy oaf that likes to make things as complicated as
possible.

No actually, its a full red-hat install. The part I left off is that
the interface I made doesn't need the computer for anything other than
power, to start, and idle. Won't do much else, and that's the part I'm
working on now (albielt slowly - lost access to dyno, so its tough to
test. I'm going to put the motor into the truck once I find this
elusive water pulley, and be done with it, and test in the truck.
Again, at this point, the PC only provides +12 and +5V to my little
card. This allows the car to start immediately upon the application of
power, and the PC can take its time counting memory and booting and all
that stuff. I just can't pull any revs with the card until the computer
reads sensors and writes back parameters. A lot of the stuff is in the
hardware, making the software I have to write much simpler. "Based on
this, do this". and the card should go "cool, okay". How's that for
technical?

Graphics mode. I was trying to cut a physical VGA display, as seen by
the PC/OS, into four quadrants through hardware. This is not my
strength (actually, neither is software), so this became a big mess
really quick. My logic was this - if the PC saw a "VGA" display, I
could use existing linux installed svgalib libraries and spend my time
writing "display this" code rather than reinventing the wheel. But this
of course follows my "make it as complex as possible" mentality. :)

I found some 320x200 serial graphic displays, and I might just go that
route instead. They aren't color, which is disappointing, but I don't
want to spend 10 years figuring this out.
