MAP versus air flow

Hello,

I understand that there are two basic methods of determing the engine load,
measuring the manifold air pressure and measuring the amount of air entering
the engine using an airmass or airflow meter.

Is one system preferable above the other, or is it just what one just likes?
The EFI system I want to make is for a 2.8 v6 (Sierra XR4i), and I've to
choose between these two system, but the car I want to test my system in (a
Sierra 2.0i) uses MAP, and I don't want to constrain myself to that system.
