GM ECU model/part numbers

Where do you find the number of the ECU (such as 747)?  I picked up a TPI
setup and the ECU says remanufactured by GM. There is a Service Number on a
tape on the outside of the case but no other numbers I can find. The number
on it is 01270879 but that doesn't match the commonly mentioned TPI ecus.
There are magic markings on the case that say 86 Firebird 305 TPI,  but I
don't see that kind of service number as an ECU in any list I can find.

So how do I figure out what I've got?
