LM1815; distributor hall sender sensing

I have an LM1815 "variable reluctance sensor amplifier" IC, which I
believe is appropriate for my application. I am trying to use it to sense
the ignition pulses from a Bosch hall sender distributor.

I prototyped the suggested circuit, but was unable to get any meaningful
output from it. Does anyone have any experience with these ICs, and if so
are there any pitfalls that I might be in right now? (I either get
seemingly uncorrelated triggers at a very high rate, or no triggering at
all)

Does the ground reference for the IC have to be the same as the one going
into the distributor?

TIA

-Steve
