Yes,  I've used the Jackrabbit.  It worked out well in a 
project I did last year.  C programmable, reasonable IDE, 
 debugger worked well.  I'm not sure how it would work 
out in an automotive environment,  but if you can get 
stable clean power and signals it may be OK.
