Once you have rpm modulation with valve opening, pumping losses will
go way down, and we'll see another big jump in fuel economy.  Gas engines
are moving into territory formerly occupied by diesels, which are about
as efficient as it gets.

By adding valve position sensors, you get full
servo-valves.

This allows modulation of lift, timing, and duration.
Eliminates need for a throttle, just open the valves
the required amount.

One can imagine multiple valve opening events during a
single cycle, perhaps for swirl control or stratified
charge management.

Been waiting for them to do this for years, ever since
I worked on old time disk drives with voice coil
actuators for the read/write heads. The cost was high,
but the technical ability to position that kind of
mass quickly and accurately existed. 

So of course, the first thing I thought of was
actuating the valves on my racecar.
