Factory setup of the 7M-GTE uses a cam position sensor (they just dropped
it into the old distributor hole for the 7M-GE and it drives off the exhaust
cam) to get crank position and the ECU drives a trio of direct fire coil
packs. Frankly, I don't know much about ignition because historically the
OEM ECU does a good enough job of keeping things under control until very
high (500+ RWHP) levels are reached. This was one of the reasons why I
wanted to retain the factory ECU and just play with fuel. This is not to
say that more power could not be obtained through different ignition tuning
of course.
Hmm interesting idea about using the Syclone or GN systems - I had never
considered that. Anyone performed a swap such as this or have details on
the systems? What system do they use to determine mass flow?
I have nothing against MAF systems in general and am aware of the benefits
they have over speed-density systems (no manifold filling issues, etc).
However, most OEM units I know of are quite physically restrictive and rail
out before the 450+ RWHP level I am building my car to be at. Of course I
am sure there are components out there somewhere that might work in my
situation - just a matter of finding them :)
Thanks for the input, and if you have any more suggestions I would love to
hear them!
