Those picture are very good, and it looks like they had specialist gear.
However you can do it with a normal SLR, a normal lens and bellows, or a set
of extension tubes, or in a pinch, a cardboard tube.
You just move the lens away from the film and your magnification increases,
depth of field decreases and the focal plane moves closer to the lens.
You also usually need a flash.
The following were all done with a 35mm SLR, bellows and a 70mm zoom lens

Careful where you point the flash, the bellows are black, but will still
reflect light

A diff pin but not the one that went inside the gears you see above...
Try taking the lens off your SLR and moving it about 1" further away and
focusing on something about 3" in front of the lens... You'll probably find
that any automatic exposure system goes haywire without the proper bellows or
extension tubes though.
