How do you tune an ECU without knock control

I had a similar experience. Owned a car that I bought from my dad. It had
pinging ever since I could remember, knew it was bad but seeing it had
always done it I didn't worry. I sold the car with 90,000miles on it and the
engine had never been opened but ran just as good as the day it was new.

However, I know of someone else who had a modern turbo efi engine that had a
slight trace of pinging and he destroyed it in months.

Difference is that the car I had was NA and not hi performance and never
really pinged at high rpm, my friends car was the opposite and what I think
is that because his exhaust was so loud you couldn't really hear the engine
anyway.

Cheers

Con
