I too have been looking for a cheap laptop, with the hopes of eventually
building an in-car EFI system out of it.  I'm also looking at making a
data acqusition device that speaks USB, or failing that, parallel port. 
I know you can buy these but usually you're looking at perhaps $300
minimum, and more if you want PCMCIA.

Best bet is ebay, I have found.  A p-233 with 128 MB ram, 4 Gig HD, and
active matrix display usually goes for about $225 - $275, but there is
usually a wide selection from which to choose.  The downside is that
it's ebay and so there are no set prices, you have to determine how much
you *really* want to pay before bidding.
