i have a '94 Z28 that i removed the factory fuel pump from (welded a =
fitting in the bottom and run a gravity feed external pump)... i left =
the sending unit in there so the gauge would still work... when i first =
turned the key to "on" (but didn't crank it over) the fuel gauge looked =
correct - 1/4 tank... then when i started the car it started swinging =
back and forth (E -> F -> E)... now it just stays stuck at way past =
full...=20

i looked at the schematic and it shows that a cap was in parallel with =
the fuel pump and that the fuel pump shared a ground with the variable =
resistance sending unit (0-90 ohm)... so i figured the voltage coming in =
to the fuel pump circuit was the problem (not sure how, but i reasoned =
that i had an RC circuit that was oscillating and that's what i was =
seeing on the gauge)... i cut the fuel pump power wire, but now the =
sending unit circuit reads 15M ohm and the gauge is pegged.... it's a =
MAJOR pita to get this tank in and out so i don't want to go through too =
many iterations of this... what did i do wrong to burn this thing up and =
should it be ok next time if i have the fuel pump circuit disconnected?

thanks,
jeff
