Looks extremely similar to two engines I'm familiar with

1) The early 70's merc twin cam I6 (110 motor) - 2 valve motor, hemi
chamber, with a funky domed/dished piston to force the combustion into
a the area around the exhaust valve (sodium cooled valves too!). Supposedly
got 180HP from 2800cc. Not too bad for a street engine in '73, but not
stunning. Engine let down badly by D-jet injection. Would be interesting
to see how it goes with accurate ignition and fueling. Ran 9.8:1 CR (from
memory).

2) The '80+ Jaguar HE V12. (Michael Mays "fireball" head). The valves are
both vertical, with the intake valve flush to the head surface and the
exhause valve recessed into the head to form a combustion pocket (with the
spark plug just to the side of the valve). Runs 12.5:1 CR on NZ pump gas
(other engines are limited to about 10:1). Pretty economical for 5300cc,
but performance is let down (only 300HP) by the fact that the exhaust valve
is shrouded (because it is recessed).

Nothing under the sun is new, and I'm sure there are other examples of
this concept going back way before either these examples, or Larry Widmer's
work.
